Artifact: Situational Assessment

The Situational Assessment captures the current, internal state of the enterprise or the subset of the enterprise as it relates to the project. Each project decides whether this artifact is needed and if needed, the appropriate extent and degree of formality.

Purpose

The Situational Assessment documents key findings about the organization's background, strategy, capabilities, strengths, and weaknesses. The assessment is performed from multiple perspectives:

  • Business strategy
  • Performance
  • Business process
  • Organizational design
  • Technical infrastructure

Audience

The following roles use this artifact:

  • All team members, especially the Role: Business Process Analyst and Role: Business Strategist, use it to understand the organization's background and current situation.
  • The Business Process Analysts use it to assess the capacity and need for organizational change.
  • The Role: Software Architect uses it to identify technology and systems-based opportunities and limitations related to the business strategy.
  • The Role: Project Manager uses it to quickly inform new team members about the organization.
