Business Rules are statements of policies or conditions that must be true within a business. This artifact is optional and may be used to capture business rules during the Inception phase.

Purpose

Capturing business rules in one location reduces maintenance effort that would be required if the same business rule were documented in several Business Use Cases or other documents. Other artifacts may refer to information in the Business Rules artifact for consistency and ease of maintenance.

Audience

The following roles use the Business Rules:

  • The Role: Business Process Analyst uses Business Rules to clarify business processes.
  • The Role: Requirements Analyst uses Business Rules to specify requirement details in use cases.
  • The Role: Software Designer may use Business Rules as input to developing analysis or design models.
