Defining a Web application's users is inherently difficult because the potential number of users is vast and the individuals so culturally diverse. This activity uses marketing research and human-computer interaction (HCI) techniques to profile users.

Purpose
To define the motivation, goals, and tasks of the target users in relation to this application. The Role: User Researcher uses market research, interviews, and personas to understand:
- Demographics
- Psychographics
- User's goals and how they are achieved
- The physical, social, and emotional environment in which the application would be used
Information gathered is input to the Artifact: User Research Report and is used to define application metaphors, user experience design, and early drafts of the Artifact: Use Case Model and the supporting Artifact: Actor Catalog.
